TI OMAP 3430 Processor Handles Video For Smartphones

INTRODUCTION: TI OMAP 3430 microcontroller is a highly integrated controller directed at the Smartphones segment. It supports most functions needed of a Smartphone controller in practically just one chip package. All you need are some support chips surrounding it, to make a Smartphone product. Beside the main phone functions and email + IM functions that are considered necessary today; handling video is the biggest challenge for such processors. Video, particularly HD video takes a lot of processor power. In a mobile application keeping the power budget low is another necessity. Looks like the TI OMAP 3430 does that well. It is the first member of the OMAP 3 family aimed at the Smartphone segment.

Palm Pre uses the processor as does some models of Sony Ericsson. Apple is rumored to be considering this processor for a future upgrade. It is interesting to take a look at how Texas Instruments is managing this difficult trade off; the trade off between high loads of processing within a low power budget!

THE OMAP 3430: The key to the solution is the choice of using the newest ARM Cortex-A8 processor core as the workhorse in this solution. This is supported by two major blocks that help with all the graphics and multimedia workload. One is a 2D/3D graphics accelerator and the second one is a imaging video accelerator. Other blocks implemented in the TI silicon solution include LCD interface, Camera interface, a USB OTG port, memory control and DMA control, various interconnects and peripheral support and a video out port.

Some of the functions supported are GPS functionality, mobile TV interface, wireless link, mobile data and voice interface, a modem interface and a touch screen controller. One supporting chip TWL 5030 not only manages power but supplies audio/video codec support. It also manages USB and keypad interfaces. Other interfaces provided are Flash memory interface (NAND or NOR), a mobile DDR interface, Trace and JTAG interfaces. Some GPIO lines, a camera serial/parallel and a serial camera interface are also available. Lastly, a group of interfaces provide a flash memory card interface, a TV interface with S-Video and a display controller Parallel-serial.

Managing all that functionality and the high resolution video needs a truly innovative processor core. It is worth investigating how the ARM Cortex-A8 implements the functionality.

THE CORTEX-A8 CORE: The Cortex family is based on the latest ARMv7 architecture from ARM. There are three flavors of the processors from this family; applications processors, real time processors and microcontrollers.
The applications processors support a full fledged virtual memory complexity and use a MMU. The real time processors are expected to be used for deep embedded use and only a memory protection unit is provided. The micro-controllers version does not have either a MMU or a MPU and only straight addressing space is supported.

The cortex-A8 is capable of processing VGA, H.264 video at 350 MHz and does it at a low power budget of 300 mW! The main features that make the processor fast are a superscalar architecture, a deep multi-stage instruction pipeline and a video processing engine based on what they call NEON technology. They have also implemented the Thumb-2 technology that produces very dense code. Code that take up low memory space yet is powerful enough to implement meaningful functionality. Thumb-2 is supported by runtime Jazelle RCT that produces just in time byte-code.

The superscalar arrangement issues two instructions for parallel execution by the two execution units available. This is a in-order pipeline. Out of order pipeline would have called for addition of complex logic on chip. So that was traded off against the need for keeping power consumption low. So you have the potential to double the performance most of the time.

A 13 stage instruction pipeline you have the instructions working 13 times faster in a strict sequential program. On an average one could expect at a least order more of processing speed. Combine all that with a separate SIMD video processor with its own pipeline and you start to see why the Coretex-A8 is such a powerful device. Add the embellishments TI has and you have a very powerful engine for implementing Smartphones.

Another phone from Verizon that is somewhat unique is the Casio G'zOne Commando. This military grade rugged phone is excellent if you are the outdoor type and might be jumping in the water by accident with your phone still in your pocket, might find yourself in extreme outdoor conditions. And yet still sports impressive specs.

It is clear that the ThunderBolt is Verizon's premier handset, with the Droid 2 and Droid Incredible 2 not far behind with the distinguishing feature being the lack of 4G in the later two phones. None of the above phones have received their taste of Gingerbread (Android 2.3 - the latest version to ship). There are unofficial versions for the brave who choice to custom ROM their phones.

T-Mobile has an impressive selection of Android phones with around thirteen types available for you to choose from. The myTouch 4G and the G2 are notable T-mobile phones because of their 4G connectivity and smart design. The Samsung Vibrant does not have 4G, but is a light, thin phone with good, practical features. I believe these to be the best Android phones from T-mobile and this article will describe why. The five top features of the myTouch 4G that make it the best T-Mobile Android are:

The myTouch is available to you in white, black, purple and red. The myTouch has an impressive, large 3.8-inch screen (800 x 480 pixel LCD touch screen) with good viewing even from side angles or in direct sun light. The clarity of the calling is good, with an excellent speakerphone. Internet connectivity is rapid due to T-Mobile's impressive 4G HSPA+ network, and I consider this to be the strongest feature of the phone. The only other T-Mobile Android to run on T-Mobile's 4G networks is the G2. Both phones give you quick download speeds of around 2 Mbps, which is quicker than the other major networks. There is also the option with the myTouch to use it as a wireless hotspot or to connect it directly to the laptop. Both are easy and quick to set up. Wireless hotspot will cost you an additional ten Dollars. The myTouch is currently running on the Android Froyo operating system (i.e. Android 2.2). However, it is expected to get the upgrade to Gingerbread soon (i.e. Android 2.3). Though Froyo is not the latest operating system from Android it is still relatively fresh and brings with it Flash 10.1 to allow better web browsing. The interface of the myTouch is highly customizable and comes pre-installed with a wide variety of great apps. One downside to having the pre-installed apps is that you are not able to delete any of them. This does tend to clutter the screen slightly with apps you might not need but does not alter functionality. That said, if you 'root' your device you are able to customize the phone to your liking, and can delete factory-installed apps. The multimedia options on this phone are brilliant, with 1 GB of built-in storage together with a 8GB MicroSD card; you will have plenty of storage room to store all your music and videos. There is a front facing VGA camera for video calling and a 5-mega-pixel camera on the back that takes reasonably sharp, high quality shots. Unless, having a physical keyboard is a high priority for you, the myTouch is the T-Mobile Android for you.

The G2 from T-Mobile has many similar features to the myTouch, but has a physical keyboard. The G2 also has a 'vanilla' Google interface, so if that is something you enjoy go for the G2. You might be asking what is a 'vanilla' Google interface. Quiet simply, it is the default user interface on the Android operating system. Most of the manufacturers then build their unique user interface that sits on top of the Android version. The only downside to these manufacturer overlays is that the overlays need to be updated for new versions of Android. This takes longer to get the upgrade. Many users also prefer the 'vanilla' version from a cosmetic point of view.

If having a physically light and thin phone is important to you, then the Samsung Vibrant is your best option. It is a great phone, but note: it does not come with 4G.

Regardless of which T-Mobile Android you choose, you might be interested to note that T-Mobile is currently running an unlimited talk, text and data special that is a total of per month. Similar plans on Sprint will cost you 0 and Verizon 0, hence, T-Mobile's rate plans are very competitively priced.
